Places to Visit

Grassington

Where All Creatures Great & Small was filmed, Grassington is located 3 miles from Burnsall, it is a lovely walk along the river bank all the way from Burnsall to Grassington - or it is a 10 minute drive.

The village huddles round an attractive cobbold square with a post office, clothing shops, cafes and a bakery. There are plenty of places to eat and, for a special occasion, there is Grassington House.

There is also a small museum relating to Grassington’s history as well as the Yorkshire Dales National Park visitor centre which is worth a visit - you catch the bus to the bustling market town of Skipton with its interesting castle and attractive canal-side.

Bolton Abbey

If you head “down the dale” approx 4 miles from The Green you will come across the beautiful village of Bolton Abbey owned by the Duke of Devonshire. You can look round the impressive priory and ruins on the banks of the beautiful River Wharfe

Just a short walk from the Priory you will find the Cavendish Pavilion, this is ideal for a stop off for coffee & cake; there is also a gift shop down there too. It gets extremely busy in the height of summer, so if you are planning a visit we would recommend you set off early! From the Cavendish there is a walk which takes you up to the Strid Wood (you will pass this on your way down to Bolton Abbey).

Also in Bolton Abbey there is the Devonshire Arms Brasserie; if you are wanting a meal for a birthday/anniversary this is the place to go. Another attraction in Bolton Abbey is Hesketh Farm Park - this a great place to take the children, they have animals there ranging from guinea pigs to sheep & cows, if you visit there in the Spring you will likely see lambs being – or having just been – born.

Harrogate

Harrogate is a lovely spa town about 40 minutes drive from Burnsall; it is full of all sorts of restaurants and shops, ideal if you are wanting to do a bit of retail therapy. A recommendation is to go to the Harrogate Turkish Baths, dating back to the 19th Century; and is one of seven that are still functioning. It has sauna rooms that gradually get hotter and hotter and the mosaic work is extremely impressive. Booking is recommended.

York

If you want to go further afield for the day, about 1 hour 30 mins drive away is York. This a great city with a huge cathedral and plenty of shops, restaurants and cafe’s. Take a stroll down “the Shambles”; the old cobbled streets filled with charming shops. It looks especially lovely at Christmas time when they have the Christmas markets on. There is also the Jorvik Viking Centre - this is a museum that takes you through the experiences of what York would have been like in the 10th century, a good one for the family.

Kilnsey Trout Farm

If you head up the road for about 6 miles, you will come to a place called Kilnsey, famous for the “Kilnsey Crag”, it is a small village with a pub and the Kilnsey Trout Farm. The crag is used by keen rock climbers, which can be equally mesmerising to watch!

Kilnsey Trout Farm is a great day out; you can fly fish on the lakes and fish the Rainbow, Brown, Blue, and Golden trout that are farmed there. There is also a family fishing pond where novices can also fish and you can catch your own fish, have it washed & prepared to cook and even take it home.

There is also a wildlife park with red squirrels, goats, alpacas and many more. If you wish for something to eat, pay a visit to their cafe where they do coffee and cake or if you are looking for something more substantial try their famous Pink Fish & Chips.

Malham

Another must–visit village is Malham. You can go for a visit, or you can go for the day and walk over the spectacular Malham Cove on the Limestone Pavement (which featured in Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows). There are many walks around this idyllic place with a few places to eat. There is also Goredale Refreshments down near Goredale Scar; a great little trailer providing refreshments, tea, coffee and chocolate if you need a little boost of energy to keep you going.

Another popular walk is Malham Tarn which is at the top of Malham. Here you will see the fabulous views looking over the village and the rest of the Dale, perfect on a clear day. Malham is very popular even if there is just a glimpse of sunshine so be sure to set off in good time so you can get yourself a parking spot in the car park.
